What do you wear during a massage treatment?
This depends on the type of massage you are having and what needs to be treated, typically with sports massage you will keep your underwear on (back fastening bra for women to access the back – or can be removed if you feel comfortable to do that.) and you will be covered with large towels, the area being worked on is the only area which will be exposed at any one time.
For pregnancy you will keep underwear on including back fastening bra, and be covered with a large sheet or large towels.

Will I have to protect my clothes from oil?
I tend to use a sports massage lotion which leaves very little residue, and I provide wipes and clean towels if it is preferred that the body be wiped down after treatment.

Will it be painful?
Massage should not be painful, as this can sometimes cause further damage to an already dysfunctional muscle but if your needs are for problematic areas, injury recovery or chronic tension you should expect to feel a little discomfort as some of the techniques used are used specifically to get to the deeper fibres of the muscle which are in tension, this is in order to breakdown adhesions and create more elasticity within the muscle, hence increasing circulation and function. You will always be encouraged to give feedback on the applied pressure to problematic areas so both you and the therapist can achieve the best results.

Pregnancy

Is pregnancy massage safe?
Yes, in fact in most cases very beneficial, as massage can assist your body through its incredible and enormous changes. A thorough consultation is always taken on your first visit and then updates at subsequent appointments, this is to get a compete understanding of how your pregnancy is progressing and to make adaptations to your treatment as required, depending on your condition and what stage of pregnancy you are at.

How is the massage performed, will I have to lie on my stomach?
Depending on what stage of pregnancy you are in will determine different positioning, those in the early stage of the first trimester can lie on their front for a short time although at this stage many women would not feel comfortable to do this, therefore most of the time you will be in a side lying position, turning to the other side half way through the treatment. During the second trimester most women can still lay for a short time on their back although always at a 45 angle. You are always put into a position where you feel most comfortable, relaxed and at ease.
