Massage for Pregnancy
Whilst studying for my Pregnancy Diploma I was also pregnant and so understand that pregnancy is a time of great change both emotionally and of course physically. We all know it is beneficial to stay fit and healthy during pregnancy particularly the latter stage (3rd trimester) leading up to labour. Your well being of course also gives the growing baby the best possible environment in which to grow. Massage can be a great support during this time alleviating back pain, tired/heavy legs, neck and shoulder pains, leg cramps, insomnia, varicose veins, oedema, all of which are often associated with pregnancy.
How does it work
For those who have a relatively trouble free time the body is still having to cope with enormous change, some of the changes which are occurring include the increase of blood volume which means the heart has to work harder to pump the blood around the body, the respiratory system is working harder due to the increased demand for oxygen, the abdominal muscles have to part to allow room for the growing uterus and this in turn puts enormous pressure on the lower back and spine, causing tight quadriceps (thighs) and laxity in the hamstrings (back of leg), and of course the hormonal changes and the effects this can have on your well being! A course of massage treatments is a good way to help counter act the pressures placed on the body, unwind, de-stress and stay healthy.
Aftercare
A consultation is taken before any treatment and the massage is adapted using specialist techniques to suit you and the stage of pregnancy you are at. The massage is performed in a position most comfortable for you, usually in a side lying position with extra pillows, cushioning to support the body. There is also aftercare/homecare advice.
